Every year, nearly 700,000 police-reported motor vehicle crashes occur at sign-controlled intersections. Most of these intersections involve a two-way or four-way stop. Nearly one-third of these crashes at intersections with stop signs involve personal injuries after a failure to come to a complete stop at the stop sign.

Rear end crashes also occur near these intersections as one driver stops abruptly while another fails to keep a proper lookout. The largest number of stop sign violations occur at intersections without proper sight distance or adequate intersection design.

The California Vehicle Code, Section 22450, prohibits a driver from failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the total fine is around $200. This moving violation puts one point on your driving record and can cause an increase in your insurance premiums.
